The Amadi Panorama Hotel has a view that almost no other Amsterdam hotel can offer, for a plain reason: most of what you see from the window did not exist thirty years ago. IJburg was lifted out of the water island by island, and the hotel sits on the top floors of one of the buildings that went up on it.

Two hotels, one idea. Amadi Hotels keeps a pair of four-star houses in Amsterdam — one beside the Vondelpark, one above the water at IJburg — on the belief that a good hotel is a well-made building with people in it who care.

Neither building was built to be a hotel. Both were built for something else first, and both were built well enough to become something else again. That is the short version. The dates below are the long one.

Our Story

A neighbourhood pulled out of a lake

1997
Sand in the IJmeer
Work starts on IJburg in the shallow water east of the city. The islands are raised in layers — sand sprayed through fine screens, left to settle and drain, then sprayed again — until the ground stands roughly two metres clear of the lake.
2002
The first residents
The first households move onto the new islands, into a mix of low-rise and mid-rise blocks, self-build plots and floating homes that is unlike anything else in Amsterdam.
2005
The tram arrives
The city extends its tram network across the water. Amsterdam Central Station is suddenly about fifteen minutes away, and IJburg stops being a building site on the edge of the map and starts being a neighbourhood.

Sixty-seven rooms above the IJ

Today the hotel fills the top three floors: sixty-seven rooms with custom-made furniture, air conditioning, a Nespresso machine and a minibar included in the rate, and a restaurant on the eighth floor looking out over the IJ, the architecture of IJburg and the skyline behind it. Breakfast is organic, and so are the tea and the wine.
