The Amadi Park Hotel did not start life as a hotel. It started as an argument about buildings: that a good one should outlive whatever it was first built for. Ours holds homes, offices and a hotel at a single address in Amsterdam-West, and it was drawn that way from the beginning.
Two hotels, one idea. Amadi Hotels keeps a pair of four-star houses in Amsterdam — one beside the Vondelpark, one above the water at IJburg — on the belief that a good hotel is a well-made building with people in it who care.
Neither building was built to be a hotel. Both were built for something else first, and both were built well enough to become something else again. That is the short version. The dates below are the long one.
Our Story
A building made to change its mind
An idea called Solids
Frank Bijdendijk publishes Solids, arguing that a building should be made well enough, and left free enough, to hold housing, work and tourism in turn — rather than be pulled down the moment its first purpose runs out.
Ground is broken
Work begins on Solid 11, on the stretch of Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat once occupied by a ward of the Wilhelminagasthuis hospital. The design is by Tony Fretton Architects of London, in aluminium, brick, natural stone and glass — materials chosen because they age rather than date.
Solid 11 opens
The building is finished and opened by Eberhard van der Laan, then mayor of Amsterdam. A large work by the artist Hans van Bentem sits in the glass front, and residents, businesses and hotel guests begin sharing one entrance.

Today that building holds thirty-three rooms, each with a bathroom fitted with a water-saving rain and hand shower, a few minutes on foot from the Vondelpark and the museum quarter. The logic the architects worked to — build well, waste little, let the use change — is the same one we run the hotel by.
